Let’s get something straight:
Every single one of us has an inner critic.
Even the strongest, loudest, most “put-together” humans you know.
That voice in your head that whispers (or screams),
“You’re not ready. You’re not good enough. Who do you think you are?”
Yeah… that’s not you.
That’s a program — an old survival mechanism that learned how to keep you small so you wouldn’t get hurt.
And if you’re serious about awakening your potential… you’ve got to learn how to spot it, name it, and redirect it.
1. Identify the Inner Critic — Catch It in the Act
Your inner critic usually shows up in three flavors:
🔥 The Saboteur
This one pops up right when you’re about to do something bold.
New business idea?
Raise your prices?
Post the damn Instagram reel?
“Nope. Too scary. Don’t do it.”
🔥 The Perfectionist
This voice sounds sooo reasonable…
“Let’s wait until it’s perfect.”
Sounds helpful, but it’s actually a sophisticated form of self-sabotage.
🔥 The Judge
Harsh. Brutal. Zero compassion.
It critiques everything — your body, your choices, your past, your dreams.
The common thread?
It speaks in absolutes (always, never), catastrophes, and limits.
Whenever you hear language like that — STOP.
That’s not your highest self… that’s the critic.
2. Name It — Yes, Literally Give It a Name
This is where the magic happens.
When you name your inner critic, you create distance.
You stop reacting emotionally and start observing objectively.
Some of my clients have critics named:
- “Doomsday Debbie”
- “Judgy Janet”
- “The Sergeant”
- “Tiny Tyrant”
- “The Ghost of 1994”
- “Little Beth” (yes, naming it after your younger self is powerful)
Pick something that makes you smirk.
Humor disarms the critic beautifully.
Because the moment you say,
“Okay, Janet, I hear you… but we’re not doing that today,”
you’re back in the driver’s seat.
3. Reframe It — Turn That Voice Into Fuel
Your critic isn’t the enemy.
It’s outdated software running in the background.
Reframing it means translating fear-based thoughts into helpful direction.
Here’s how:
Tactic 1: Flip the Fear
When your critic says,
“You’re going to fail,”
you translate it to:
“This matters. You’re stretching. Keep going.”
Tactic 2: Upgrade the Script
Critic: “You’re too much.”
Reframe: “My intensity is my power.”
Critic: “What if people judge you?”
Reframe: “People judge everything — I’m still choosing courage.”
Critic: “You never stick with anything.”
Reframe: “I’m evolving, and this chapter gets to be different.”
Tactic 3: Use the 5-Second Interruption
When that critic voice hits, interrupt it with:
“Noted — now what’s the next right ACTION?”
Action snaps you out of spiraling and drops you back into possibility.
4. Why This Matters
Because you can’t build a bold business…
You can’t transform your body…
You can’t reshape your identity…
while running the soundtrack of a scared child in your mind.
Identifying, naming, and reframing your critic is how you reclaim the reins.
This is you stepping out of survival mode and into creation mode.
This is you choosing your awaken. era.
5. Try This Today
- Listen for the voice
- Write down the exact words it says
- Choose a name
- Create its new, empowered translation
Do this for one week and watch how fast the noise loses its grip.
You are not your inner critic.
You are the one who gets to rewrite the script.
